With so many facial injectable fillers, it can feel a little overwhelming when trying to figure out what’s best for you. But with technology moving as fast as it does, creating a multitude of innovative injectable fillers allows us to keep you looking your best, without going under the knife and with little downtime.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectables used to treat facial wrinkles/folds (think smile lines), restore volume lost in our jowls, jawline, temples & cheeks, and increase the appearance of fullness on the hands. We can even used dermal fillers for a non-surgical nose job. Each dermal filler has their own strong points and weak points. At La Fontaine, we meet with each patient to decide which dermal filler is the best to meet their desired improvement and financial goals.
Radiesse® is a new generation filler, that uses calcium based microspheres to restore volume and fill in lines and wrinkles. Radiesse® is the filler of choice for a very popular new treatment- Hand Restoration. By adding Radiesse to the hands, you see an instant rejuvenation and fullness restored to the area which helps conceal the veins we start to see as we age and lose volume there.
Radiesse lasts over 1 year and is also used to decrease facial lines such as the nasolabial folds (from the nose to the outside corner of the mouth) and marionette lines (from the corner of the mouth downwards). Radiesse is one of Dr. Oleszek’s favorite fillers to use. For more information, visit the company’s website.
The most popular dermal filler world-wide, Juvederm® is similar to Restylane in that it is based on hyaluronic acid. It lasts about as long as Restylane (maybe a little longer) but is slightly more pliable or soft. This is Dr. Oleszek’s most popular filler for plumping the lips.
La Fontaine Aesthetics is the preferred center for VOLUMA® Non-Surgical Face Lifts.
- Lifting cheeks and sculpting cheekbones
- Defining the jawline and decreasing jowling
- Lifting eyebrows
As we age we normally lose facial volume – the cheeks deflate and descend causing jowls (a sagging jawline) and sagging smile lines. VOLUMA® uses hyaluronic acid (a natural sugar) to instantly lift and sculpt the cheekbones to give a softer and more youthful appearance.
Restylane® is the most popular filler. Restylane is a clear gel of hyaluronic acid, that when injected into the skin adds volume and support to the skin. This can decrease facial lines such as the nasolabial folds (from the nose to the outside corner of the mouth) and marionette lines (from the corner of the mouth downwards).
Restylane is also used to restore fullness to thin lips, restore volume under the eyes to take away the dark circles.
Now Restylane contains a numbing medicine, which helps the treatment have less discomfort.
Bellafill® is a permanent filler that is only approved for correction of smile lines. Because it is not absorbed by the body, Bellafill® provides permanent support to your skin, so it will not require the frequent repeat injections to maintain the results.
With Bellafill, full correction is not obtained after one visit but slowly over multiple treatment sessions a month apart so that complications are minimized. Dr. Oleszek likes to use Bellafill around the eyes, smile lines and cheeks. Bellafill is becoming a popular choice among our patients.
If you have used temporary dermal fillers such as Restylane®, Juvederm®, Radiesse® or Sculptra® in the past, and liked the results, then you may be a candidate for Bellafill®.
Sculptra® is a unique type of filler, it stimulates the skin to make its own collagen. This is different mechanism than other fillers, which use a gel to plump and stretch the skin. Because Sculptra stimulates collagen production, it takes the body several months to have the full effects, but the effects can last over 2 years. It is generally used as a whole face treatment to restore volume and fullness, as opposed to Restylane and Cosmoplast that are used for individual lines on the face.
Treatments take 30 minutes and results last up to 6 to12 months (over 2 years for Sculptra and Bellafill). Nerve blocks are the standard at La Fontaine to help minimize any discomfort. After the treatment normal activities can be resumed immediately, with discomfort being minimal. Side effects include only slight swelling and redness at the injection site, occasionally there is bruising which can be covered with make-up.
Taking fat from an unwanted area and using it as a filler in the face is a great option for patients and has been performed safely by doctors for nearly 30 years.
Fat is a natural and non-synthetic material that can give long-lasting to permanent results. Compared to Juvederm or Restylane that can last up to one year.
Fat Transfer to the face is best for patients needing more than four syringes of filler. In the case of patients that need less than four syringes and are seeking longer lasting results Bellafill may be the better filler alternative.
Fat is initially harvested in a gentle liposuction procedure and then processed to leave only intact fat cells. The next step is to use these fat cells like traditional fillers, like Restylane or Juvederm. The nice thing is that when up to 30cc of fat are used each session – that can equal to 30 syringes of Restylane at a price of over $15,000 and its effects are longer lasting.
