Acne scars are a common problem treated at La Fontaine. As we see, acne scarring does not improve as we age - it worsens unless treatments are done to improve the scarring. With many acne scar treatments including laser, Intracel RF microneedling, fillers, subcision and minor skin surgery, the physician will match the recommended treatment to the individual’s downtime and desired results.
For patients with only minimal downtime but still wanting improvement, we recommend microneedling treatments. This treatment uses tiny micro-needles to break up the acne scars and stimulate collagen production even skin texture. Most patients have a slight pinkness to the skin for 24 hours which is virtually imperceptible. We see around 30%-40% improvement in acne scars after 6 monthly treatments.
The next step up in treatments is the Intracel RF microneedling. This device uses microneedling but further enhances the results by deploying RF energy at the micro needle tip in the acne scars. The Intacel RF microneedling treatment also only has 1 day of pinkness in the grated skin, but has more improvement in the scarring compared to regular microneedling.
The MiXto fractional CO2 laser can give the most significant results. The results improve as the intensity of the treatment increases from light to medium to heavy. Improvement of around 70% can be seen, but the downtime can range from 5 to 12 days. To optimize results, we often perform the high intensity MiXto fractional CO2 laser with subcision. We use the Taylor liberator to subcise the cheek and/or temples. This technique releases the underside of the scar which pleases the depressions and gives additional smoothing of the skin.
For pin-point deep ‘ice-pick’ scars, punch excision of the scar is recommended. This has minimal downtime but does require a stitch in the scar area for up to a week.
For pin-point deep 'ice-pick' acne scars, punch excision is a common treatment. This is limited to only removing the small area of the scar and can sometimes need no stitches.
For individual broad based scars, subcision is an effective treatment. Subcision is often combined with the other treatments of The DermaRoller or the MiXto Fractional CO2 treatment. For pin-point deep 'ice-pick' acne scars, punch excision is a common treatment. This is limited to only removing the small area of the scar and can sometimes need no stitches. We see patients for complimentary consultations and will review all treatment options.
