Just like with any procedure, it is important to talk with your physician about your medical history. Some factors that may prevent you from safely receiving treatment include pregnancy, open sores or lesions, skin cancer, and keloid formation (excess raised scarring).

How does the Photofacial work?

PhotoFacial works by using light energy, which is absorbed into particular target cells with color in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy, which purposely causes damage to the predetermined target area. The treatment can be adjusted to your specific skin care needs. Using different filters, your aesthetician can address multiple issues on your face with one system.

Is it safe?

PhotoFacial procedures have become very popular because their benefits outweigh their risks. When performed by a qualified aesthetician at our award-winning aesthetic practice in Denver, PhotoFacial treatments can non-invasively improve almost all aspects of your skin aesthetics. Potential side effects are minimal but can include swelling, redness and facial flushing, and usually subside in a few hours are days after your procedure.

What can I expect during a PhotoFacial treatment?

Our team at La Fontaine is committed to working with each patient focusing on minimally invasive treatments for facial rejuvenation. PhotoFacial is no exception. With minimal downtime, you can expect to be back to your routine the same day as your photofacial in Denver.

Your treatment will take place in the comfort of our office. It’s a rather quick procedure; 15 minutes or less. The procedure is comfortable; you may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping, but without the stinging.

It is normal for your skin to feel warm after your treatment. You will be a bit pinker, a feeling similar to a sunburn, but it will subside in about 30 minutes. If you have freckles or age spots, they will darken and then flake off. Typically, within a week, you are looking significantly better with a smoother, rejuvenated appearance.

You will have a greater sensitivity to the sun for a couple of weeks following your treatment. You can still go outside, but you will need to make sure you apply a UV sunscreen to protect your skin.

How many treatments will I need?

When we talk to our patients about treatments, we always say it will depend on each individual’s skin care needs and long-term goals. Many skin care issues can be treated with only one session. If you are struggling with a more severe skin care issue, you may need three to five treatments. It is common to return for maintenance treatments once a year. With a good sunscreen regimen, you can stretch your maintenance to every few years.

What can I expect during recovery?

After your IPL photofacial, your skin will be red in a similar way to a sunburn, and you may experience some swelling. This redness will fade after approximately two to five days. During the two weeks that follow your treatment, the pigmented areas, such as freckles or sun spots, will get darker, then raise and flake off to reveal your healthy skin beneath. During the healing process, do not pick at these areas. Within a day of your treatment, you can wear makeup again. Stay hydrated during the healing process, and use an ice pack intermittently to help with any swelling.
